African Nature

There is a lot to see in Botswana, lots of different kinds of activities to partake in and sites to see. The sites I talk about here are all different kinds of national or game parks. The Okavango delta, this river cuts through the centre of the Kalahari Desert and with just one canoe ride you get to experience all that nature has on offer. Every wildlife animal that lives here is after some supply of water and that is when you get to sit in your canoe and watch the water’s edge as the animals flock there to get a drink. The Chobe National Park is home to over 120 000 elephants, it’s a must to go and see. A very popular activity in Botswana is off road racing. Safari walks, game drives, quad biking, boating down rivers and for relaxation there is lounging in the sun on a deck at a lodge overlooking the Okavango delta or there is memorabilia shopping and so many more other things to par take in.

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert takes up about 84% of Botswana. The Kalahari Desert isn’t a true desert as such but more like a thirsty land as it gets enough rainfall. The Kalahari Desert isn’t just one large heap of sand spaced out over 2 countries (Botswana and Namibia); the desert has got a variety of fauna and flora.

General Information about Botswana

English is Botswana’s most common spoken language, making travelling a lot easier. When you plan your trip to Botswana make sure you plan it over their autumn and winter months, April to August. The weather is just right and the days are enjoyable, as during December and March Botswana have their heavier rain fall season and there summer is hot.

World Heritage Site

Tsodilo is located in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. Tsodilo is known for having over 4,500 rock paintings in an area. The rock art depicts wildlife and shows a unique record of human settlement that took place many years ago.

When I think of coffee, I think of the rich aroma of the freshly roasted coffee beans and that smell that hangs in the air of a coffee shop. I also think of the taste and I think hanging out with friends. I reckon that coffee is the added ingredient that adds warmth, joy and memories to any occasion. But overall the most important thing about having a cup of coffee is finding the right place to have that cup!

Nina’s

Nina’s is not a coffee shop but a restaurant. Nina’s do have the most amazing coffee closest to the beach. Nina’s are located in the Spar Centre in Jeffreys Bay and is walking distance to the world renown surfing spot called Supertubes. The froth that is thick on the top of the coffee cup makes it perfect for cold winter mornings. The one thing I really love at Nina’s is the atmosphere, its laid back and chilled out. The decor that Nina’s have chosen is really inspiring. From the old surf boards hanging up to the beautiful framed art work to the stunning fabric on your seat. Nina’s have quite an extensive variety on their menu; from seafood to different kinds of Tai dishes to a pizza’s, so make sure that you try something out with your coffee. A little added extra on the side of your cup, which I love, is the delicious nougat biscuit that you get with your coffee.

Manna Plus

Global Junction

My next favourite Coffee Shop is Global Junction. Global Junction is located in Fountains Shopping Mall on the outskirts of Jeffreys Bay. It is one of those Coffee Shops that you see in the movies where the guy is running past to declare his undying love to the girl who is about to board an aeroplane. It reminds me of those Coffee Shops except with much better coffee and really amazing service. The coffee comes in these cute miss matched mugs and saucers yet it still looks great. Definitely try out the rest of the menu; they have named the food that they serve after different cities and countries of the world. My favourite is the bacon, avocado and mozzarella cheese tramazzini (served either with French fries or salad) which is called The Caribbean. If you love looking at pictures from around the world then you will love the décor. A cute added extra is the smarties that you get on your saucer. For a little bit more encouragement for you to what to go to Global Junction is that facts that you can go in on a Saturday and watch the rugby live on their big screen TV. Something I haven’t looked into it yet but they are also expanding into a travel agency. So if you looking to book travel tickets then head over to the Fountains Mall shopping centre to book them now.

In closing, coffee is one of those drinks that bring people together so comment and share where you have been in Jeffreys Bay that you have enjoyed that extra special cup of java. I will keep you posted on my experiences to.

Namibia is on the south-west side of the African continent. Its borders are the Atlantic Ocean and Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east.

African Nature

Most of Namibia is made up of desert. Namibia is home to Sossuvlei, meaning “the gathering place of water” so in you’re mind you might have a picture of a beautiful place with maybe a wonderful dam or river but unfortunately that isn’t true.  It’s more like the driest place. Soosuvlei is actually huge sand dunes with not a drop of water in site.  Sossuvlei has sand dunes that have been rated some of the largest in the world. Maybe go and take a look as these monstrous sand dunes. Beside the country been really dry, it still has the Atlantic Ocean as a border. Walvis Bay has a lot on offer from dolphin cruises to a walk along the lagoon. Namibia has a different taste for ever adventurous tourist.  Namibia is also home to Swakopmund here you can quad-bike, sand board, sand ski or even parasail over the beautiful sand formations.  The Last attraction I want to talk about is the Fish River Canyon.  The Fish River Canyon is a great hiking destination, with many hiking trails. Most of the hikes are not for the out of shape person as some take up to 4 days to complete. With saying that I’m really sure that is would be really worth it to go on such a hike. The adventure one could have the views, the experience and the utter beauty of all of it.

For example, Swaziland is well known for the “beehive” dry grassed hunts that they make and live in. This is a traditional house that they live in. One of their cultural activities is the Reed dance, which is an 8 day ceremony where all the single ladies get together; to dance and celebrate the queen (happens August/ September).

Some of the trails you can try are the Mlawula Trails in the Lubombo Mountains and Kirkhill Trails where you can explore the Sithobela Gorge and river. A really nice thing about hiking is that you get to experience everything first hand, you get to explore the country on your own 2 feet and your body gets to use all its senses to take in the beauty of the land. Another thing about Swaziland and about most African countries is that they all have a wide variety of Safari’s you can participate in. Lesotho is an amazing country which is landlocked, completely surrounded by South Africa. In Lesotho you can really experience different traditions.

Cultural Diversity

Lesotho is made up of around 99% Basotho people. I have travelled Lesotho staying in mud huts in the mountains next to

lesotho's landscape

a Basotho tribe. The Basotho’s are very traditional people. From Maseru, been the capital city, to the mountains it is a very different cultural experience. In the mountains you get to enjoy and partake in their traditions, for example men are not allowed to where short pants; if they do they are classed as boys. The women aren’t allowed to wear pants but only long skirts or dresses. In the mountains you get to experience the unending hospitality of the local people. They will offer you there all even though they have clos

e to nothing. They are a very friendly nation filled with very caring people. Basotho’s are also very famous for their blankets. You will see that no matter what time of day or what time of year the Basotho people will adorn these beautiful blankets. A Mosotho once said “that when you have a bl

anket and pocket knife, you can sleep and you can eat.”

Travel Destiny

There are many tourist attractions in Lesotho, the biggest attraction is hiking. There are many hiking routes through the many mountainous passes. If you not one for hiking then there’s the Sehlabathebe National Park. This park is famous for unusual rock formations, bird watching and alpine flora. Then there’s the famous Maletsunyane Waterfalls which is one of the highest single dropping waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, dropping at 186 metres. For the adventurous person there is the Lesotho Highlands that get caked in snow every winter and offers every snow boarder the chance to indulge in some snowboarding. Lesotho is also home to the second biggest dam in Africa, the Katse Dam, situated in the heart of Lesotho.

African Nature

landscapeLesotho isn’t one of those African countries where you find loads of different animal life but more various kinds of plant life which gives you one very scenic country. I speak from personal experience; the country is beautiful and breathtaking in so many ways that when you there words can’t describe the untouched nature that is there before your very eyes. The wide landscape of just mountains that is rich in the colour green and lush. Then there are unfortunately other parts of Lesotho that have been badly damaged by soil erosion, it still in its own way looks amazing as the soil is a unfathomable red colour. In the mountains you get to experience the cultures more than in the city, the young boys shepherding the herds of sheep, the tribe leaders on horseback travelling on the gravel roads and the amazing mud huts.

Different Activities/ Attraction

• Morija Museum
• Thaba Bosiu
• Pony trekking
• Paragliding and hand gliding
• Roof of Africa Scenic Route
• Lesotho skiing resort
• Fly Fishing
• Qacha’s Nek

mud hutWhen I went to Lesotho I stayed at a friend’s house in the city of Maseru but then when we decided to through the mountain passes we went to stay in mud huts right next to a tribal camp. Looking back at my experience I think I am really blessed to have had this opportunity. To be able to experience everything that I have spoken about. I never felt unsafe once. There was no electricity or shower facility. We had to use the waterfall that was about a 10 minute walk away to be able to shower and freshen up. Obviously your experience doesn’t have to be like mine, not everyone want s an adventure so crazy but there are other alternative places to stay at. There are loads of difference accommodation facilities in Lesotho for all your needs, from camping to 5 star lodges. Some really cool places I have heard about are The Maseru Sun Hotel and Casino, Ramabanta Guest House and Queens Proteas.

trainZambia is another landlocked country in Africa. It is surrounded by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west.  Zambia has one of the lowest populations to land ratio.

Cultural Diversity

Zambians are friendly and hospitable people. This country is rich though in cultural tribes. Zambia’s existing cultures are a blend of values and spiritual customs of more than 70 different cultural tribes.  Although this is quite a big number the customs and rituals they partake in are only done in the rural areas as most of the urban areas have become much westernised.  Unfortunately like most parts of Africa they suffer with poverty. Although some parts are suffering with poverty, there is an element about Zambia that is Zambians are really creative.  They know how to make crafty handmade things to resale to tourists. Amazing wood, wire, basketry or beaded crafts the Zambians can make.  It’s pretty crazy though as they sit anywhere along the road, even in the middle of nowhere, just to sale their crafts. The reason for this is that their crafts are there lively hood and their sole income.

Travel Destiny

There are many attractions to talk about when it comes to Zambia. The most famous attraction has to be the Victoria Falls, the name victora fallsmeaning “smoke that thunders”. The Victoria Falls is spread out 1.7km’s wide and falls for about 100 metres down. This is really something to be able to experience. Then there’s the splendid Lake Kariba, where you can spend your day a few metres away from the water’s edge watching the animal and bird life.  South Luangwa National Park famous for its very own “walking safari” has over 400 species of birds and 60 different species of animals.  There are many things you can partake in when in Zambia, there are the normal everyday things that most countries have like Art galleries, museums and monuments but then there’s the interesting things like the Chimp Sanctuary, the Zambezi River, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Bangweulu. All these amazing places have amazing things to do, like going on Safari’s, hikes, white water rafting, bungee jumping, tandem kayaking, horse trials and many more adventurous things.

African Nature

There are many different species of wildlife and birdlife in Zambia. There are a lot of rivers and lakes in Zambia which give animals place live around

or to hide in, like the Zambezi River (covers 3,540kms through six countries) and Lake Tanganyika (is the seventh largest freshwater lake in the world at 32,900 km2 and lays in between 4 neighbouring countries). The surrounding areas where the lakes and rivers flow are lush and green and flourishing with all kinds of plant life to help the animals that live there.

World Heritage Sitesvictoria falls, zambia

There is only one world heritage site and that is Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world.

Accommodation

There are a lot of places that you can stay at, some more luxurious then others but you will find anything you are looking for.  There are really great game lodges with really good accommodation.  A few places that have been recommended when traveling to Zambia are the Lusaka Backpackers, the Kabula Lodge Western Zambia and the Maramba River Lodge.

Why South Africa?

Why should I visit South Africa, you might be asking yourself? My question to you is why not? There are many reasons why you should visit South Africa. I would like to elaborate on some of the main reasons why in this article. South Africa has a history and most times people are too scared to come here but South Africa really doesn’t bite. All you need to have is a little street smarts. In your own country you should be aware about safely and the precautions you have to take but in the country you visiting you shouldn’t view it differently. Put your preconceived ideas a side and read further.

What South Africa Has On Offer

My first reason would be to come see the beauty. South Africa’s landscape is wide open and fresh air is in abundance. Not only just concrete jungle beauty but actual natural beauty. South Africa has breathtaking views that will blow your mind. You say the words South Africa and everyone thinks of Table Mountain, Robben Island, The Kruger National Park and the list goes on, which is great but there are loads of hidden gems in South Africa. There are lots of other attractions in South Africa that no one really speaks about for example Simon’s Town in Cape Town has Bolder’s beach where the penguins roam freely. Then in the Eastern Cape you have biggest tree in South Africa. There’s the Ngamathuba arts and crafts market that will leave you lingering through the endless stores for African crafts and homemade goods. The only thing South Africa is waiting for is you to come discover what it has to offer. I can honestly say that even though I have lived here my whole life there are still lots of things I havent see, or discovered and would love to experience. So when you come make sure you have enough time to come and experience everything.

South Africa Routes

There are 2 travel routes that are a must to travel on. The Garden Route where you travel along the coast of South Africa and then there’s Route 62 which is the route just off the coast. These 2 routes are my favourite 2 roads to travel on in South Africa. If I had to choose between the 2 routes, I would have to pick Route 62 and that’s only because the endlessness of those empty roads brings on good road trip tunes and the views of nature at its best. Both these stretches of road are adventurous with spectacular views of South Africa’s mountain ranges. Overall there is a lot to see on both these routes, with small towns to browse through, from farm stalls, to art galleries, to wine tasting, to 4X4 trails and the list is endless. Everything your heart desires and more you will find on these to roads. I would say that the Garden Route having the ocean is the only major difference between the two routes. Both these routes have equally the same amount to see and to do. So it is a very difficult choice to make.

South Africa for Yourself

A saying that my father always tells me is “Let me never rob you of the joy of self discovery.” This saying rings such truth. No one can experience this adventure for you. You can only experience things for yourself and no one else can. Yes looking at pictures is always attractive but it can’t explain and express how things really are. When looking at a picture you can only use one of your senses which is “see” but what about feeling, smelling, hearing and taste. So come to South Africa and all in love with the experience of a life time.

New Adventures

It has been just over a year since I left for the Karoo (Karoo been a Khoisan word meaning “land of thirst) to live on a farm for 3 months. The Karoo holds hot summer days and extremely cold winter nights. The place I stayed at was about 46kms away from any form of civilization. Although we think those small little towns are so backward and behind in the times they are true gems filled with rich heritage and history. Knock on any resident’s door and they will tell you great stories of the history of their town.

The Splendid Karoo

The Karoo is made up of a whole group of towns; some of the towns are Aberdeen, Cookhouse, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville, Nieu-Bethesda, Pearston and Somerset-East. The Karoo has wild vegetation and beautiful mountain passes. I always say that even though the interior part of South Africa doesn’t have the ocean, the Karoo has other things to make up for it. Like breath-taking sunrises, sunsets and these fluffy marshmallows looking clouds. All those things make up for not having an ocean to dip your toes in. Spending an afternoon lying on the grass watching the world go by, almost feeling like if you had to lift your hand up to the sky you could pull the cloud down. The crisp fresh air is what the Karoo has on offer. You drive for miles before you see any form of life, almost like watching your dog run away for days before he really disappears. You get a view of amazing plant life, thousands of different species of plants plus the Karoo is actually famous for the largest variety of succulents. Above all these things I have mentioned the bird life is incredible a true bird watchers dream.

Be Adventurous in the Karoo

There is nothing better than taking a break from the concrete jungle and finding yourself getting lost in amongst the openness of nature. I personally feel that sometimes because we stuck in the rut of our 9 to 5ers we don’t appreciate and know about what’s out there. We need time to explore. Even though we get stuck in a rut, we should make a plan to get out there and experience what we can. The word adventure is key because ever place you travel to should be an adventure. There is always interesting and exciting things to find in places you have never been to before. Yes, I know the Karoo can’t be marked off your list of top 10 attractions you would like to see but there’s nothing like a breath of fresh air.
